The Cult – Frederik Ruegger for Lampoon, the Muscles issue
Driven by his own enthusiasm for the diversity of martial arts and fitness sports, Frederik Ruegger packed his cameras and traveled to a bodybuilding contest in south-west Germany, the region he grew up. He found himself chattering around with many of the characters at the event
The visual outcome of this journey enfolds a collection of images that stand out with an intimacy to the world of bodybuilding. Not only portraits – the works on display also provide perspectives on the less accessible spaces where the showdown onstage is prepared, and solemnized. Backstage, bizarreness lingers. This visualized glimpse will catch our attention with its proximity; a kind of proximity that only emerges in the interplay between the photographer and the photographed
