The Dior Autumn-Winter 2020-2021 Haute Couture collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri was broadcasted live on all the House’s digital channels, defying the Covid-19 pandemic. The couture pieces were staged at the heart of a film – entitled Le Mythe Dior- directed by Matteo Garrone, drawing inspiration from female surrealists like Dora Maar or Jaqueline Lamba.

«The concept of film, as a work of art and an artistic medium, has always captivated me; I have often thought of experimenting with it in order to reproduce the atmosphere of haute couture. Cinema is an art, a work of authorship and a chorale», says the Creative Director. In couture presentation, the spectators were taken on a mystic display tour into the world of Le Mythe Dior, a film directed by the filmmaker Matteo Garrone who recently signed Pinocchio.
Leonora Carrington and Dorothea Tanning
The pieces from the Fall-Winter 2020-2021 Haute Couture line were inspired by nature, reflected in the gradations of red, like a coral reef swaying in the ocean. The hues of paintings by Leonora Carrington and Dorothea Tanning come to life on the designs of Maria Grazia Chiuri. The wedding gown revives fashion’s obliterated heritage.

Chiuri’s Autumn-Winter 2020-2021 collection was presented in form of doll-size dresses. The concept borrows from the artisanal poetry that sublimated these creations. In designing these thirty-seven silhouettes, Maria Grazia Chiuri intended to honor the work and the journeys of five figures of the Surrealist movement: Lee Miller, Dora Maar, Dorothea Tanning, Leonora Carrington and Jacqueline Lamba. Each one a visionary, these indivisuals transcended their role as “muse” by declaring their vocations as artists of talent, choosing to cross the stereotypical boundaries imposed by beauty, achieving femininity in their surrealist sphere.

«Surrealist images manage to make visible what is in itself invisible. I’m interested in mystery and magic, which are also a way of exorcising uncertainty about the future», says Maria Grazia Chiuri of her Autumn-Winter 2020-2021 Haute Couture collection. Embodying an alchemy of the Dior dream, mythology and the silver screen, this moment of enchantment pays homage to the Théâtre de la mode, an event initiated in 1945 to promote French couture around the world, and Paris as the capital of haute couture. Luxury being above about the beauty of gesture, it was symbolic for the Creative Director of Dior women’s collections to reinvent a spirit of freedom in the name of the creative energy passed down by Monsieur Dior.
