The value of time for a design development – 20 years of the J12 watch

J12 watch, the 20th anniversary: Chanel recently released a collection of ceramic and diamond versions of the watch 

Honoring the 20th anniversary of the J12 watch, Chanel recently released a collection of ceramic and diamond versions of the watch – the J12 Paradoxe, the J12 Paradoxe Diamonds, and the J12 X-Ray. Firstly, launched in the year 2000, the timepiece Chanel J12 shaped the landscape of watchmaking. While being reinvented over the years, it preserved its identity and status as one of the first unisex watches. The name J12  – as well as the choice of the colors black and white can be traced back to Jacques Helleu, the Chanel Art director, responsible for the first Chanel J12 prototype.

Inspired by the silhouettes of racing Yacht’s from the America’s cup, it is an icon of the 21st-century watchmaking, Chanel declares on the official website. In 2019, Chanel had been awarded for the J12 caliber 12.1 in the ladies category at the Grand Prix D’Horlogerie de Geneve. The Global Head of Watches and Fine Jewellery at Chanel, Nicolas Beau, mentions in an interview with the German watch magazine UhrenkosmosTime. Those who have it can create and develop designs in a meaningful way instead of bringing something new to the market every month.

Arnaud Chastaignt, director of the Chanel Watch Creation Studio, has revised the watch to the ultimate. Incorporating materials such as white or black ceramic and steel into the design, the watch gets a more graphic impact. The feature of its 12.1 caliber, a self-winding movement manufactured exclusively for Chanel, makes the model a timepiece. Compared to its precursors, the watches enhanced dial is now larger, the bezel and crown are more refined.
