Sun Woo – Sculptural silhouettes as artworks

It is a period of reflection that relates to aesthetics, taking place before considering the restraints of production. Intw Sun Woo

My dad is an interior designer, my mom has always been passionate about arts. This facts naturally led me to experience different fields within arts. But fashion to me was the most interesting subject: it has movement and flexibility. I can communicate with people when I am wearing my pieces. Also, it can be wearable or become totally unrealistic. These elements and features of fashion has always attracted my interest a lot. That is why I decided to learn more about designing fashion and to make it my profession.

I follow artists and designers who put strong storytelling and principles through their creative process. For my last collection, I mainly got inspiration by Bauhaus aesthetics on furniture, by Kazimir Malevich, by Oskar Schlemmer, and also by Lucy Orta’s series of refuge wear.

SUN WOO – DESIGN AND INSPIRATION

I would definitely say that the key piece of my last collection was a white pop-up t-shirt. It is the first piece I invented, although the design went through many failures. Basically, it brought together in itself all my ideas of the collection: the simplicity, the pop-up tent method and it was made of technical jersey fabric – which means “protection”.

About sustainability: I am thinking carefully about which steps to take as a brand. I have been paying attention to the small parts of the production – for example, using recycled fabrics, trying to use fabrics wastes when making samples. These days I am considering on grafting digital methods onto pattern cutting, in order to use less paper and fabric in the making of toile.

SUN WOO – DESIGN AND INSPIRATION

SUN WOO is a womenswear label that aims for artwear. As a brand, storytelling is the most important factor: the goal is to reinterpret and expand visual ideas. It focuses on creating experimental 3D structures and unexpected silhouettes with a minimal aesthetic, aiming to apply sculptural beauty to clothing. Every season, technical fabrics are combined with intense colors to represent clothes as “protection” and “expression”. Sun Woo is both a visual stimulus and a joyful experience. It is not just about clothing as something you can wear every day, it is about consuming a brand as an artwork.
