Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort, Mozambique. An adults-only island escape

Off the coast of Mozambique in the Quirimbas Archipelago, African colors and tastes entwine with a Robinson Crusoe-inspired experience at the Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort

The Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort is located on Medjumbe, a secluded private island part of the Quirimbas Archipelago, situated along Mozambique’s northern coastline. The archipelago consists of thirty-two islands known for their coral reefs, diving sites, azure sea, and white sand beaches. A melting-pot of Portuguese, Arabian, and African influences, originally these islands were home to fishing settlements, which developed around Arab trading posts and thrived under the Portuguese trading routes.

The resort was built in 2004 and was Mozambique’s first Private Marine Protected Area. The island is one kilometer long and five hundred meters wide with only twelve beach pool villas dotted around the island. Ideal for a romantic holiday, it is full of ocean thrills and nature treasures both above and below water. As an adults-only resort, it is a destination for couples, honeymooners, and divers. Anantara Medjumbe inspires a sense of adventure.

Features of the resort include dining on the beach at low tides and soaking in the ocean views that change by the hour. Guests can also enjoy sleeping under the stars at Quissanga Island, a private island fifteen minutes away from Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort.

Privacy is key and every detail is customized to the individual clients’ needs by their personal butlers. Guests are surrounded by nature: bird sounds, ocean smell, and seafood straight from the ocean. Since the beginning, Anantara Medjumbe has strived to promote an African experience, from the furniture and textiles to the local products such as eggs, vegetables, and Mozambican chili, which are produced on the island. Guests can interact with inhabitants of the historical Ibo island.

Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort is a home away from home. The majority of guests return every year to the island and many have been coming for over ten years. Anantara Medjumbe offers numerous activities, ranging from private picnics on the Quissanga Island and dinner at a 1930s lighthouse at the eastern tip of the Medjumbe island.

The resort organizes a dhow cruise where guests experience a sunset voyage. Water sports lovers can partake in water activities such as snorkeling, water skiing, wakeboarding, and fishing. Guests can participate in underwater adventures at unique dive sites which feature untouched marine ecosystems and see coral reefs. Anantara has its own spa which provides guests with the pampering of the body, mind, and soul.

Despite the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, Anantara Medjumbe has managed to maintain the safety and wellbeing of their guests. The resort has been following the State of Emergency guidelines highlighted by the Mozambique government and the World Health Organisation. Their ‘Stay with Peace of Mind’ initiative follows guidelines that are fully compliant with several expert advisories and measures are taken to keep everyone safe at all times at the resort.

Anantara Medjumbe is a year-round destination, as the sea and air temperatures do not fluctuate between the winter and summer months. Summers, between October and March, are usually hot and humid. Winters, between July and October, are still hot and dry during the day, but slightly colder after sunset. The rains come between November and March.

Each season provides visitors to the island with differing experiences. Humpback whale migrations are at their peak in the months between July and October, enabling guests to experience whale watching excursions. Between May and September, turtle walk excursions are possible, as green turtles lay their eggs on the Medjumbe Island at night and guests often spot hatchlings.
