Finca Can Martí, Ibiza. An energy-efficient property in dichotomy with the island’s chaos

Lodged in a natural reserve is Finca Can Martí Ibiza, a seventeenth-century farm holding powered by solar energy, organic permaculture farming, and recycled water

Finca Can Martí in Ibiza

Ibiza is famous for its clubs, beaches and night parties. But the isle has not only that to offer. In the inland, in fact, in the northern part of the island, a natural reserve is hidden to most of the tourists. The area of Es Amunts is a mountainous region running along the northwest of Ibiza. From Cape Nunò de Saint Anoin de Portmany to the municipality of Saint Joan de Labritja. The largest nature reserve of the island – the rocky area offers Ibiza’s preserved customs and traditions – is lined with hiking routes leading to the multitude of hidden beaches on the island. In this natural area is located Finca Can Martí.

The finca is a property built on rural or rustic land. Buildings used for housing characterize the location. It is a fair piece of land with cottages and small houses. The Finca Can Martí is four-hundred years old and has always remained an active farm. In 1992 Peter and Isabelle Brantschen bought the farm. They transformed it into a sustainable structure in 1994. Bio construction materials, like lime and clay, characterized the renovations, only raising door openings and improving insulation.

Sustainability at Finca Can Martí

They decided to preserve the authentic finca’s traditional look, but providing optimal comfort for the guests. Even the interiors reflect the traditional look with lime painted walls and wood ceilings. Natural materials mark the fabrics and furniture. When possible they come from local realities. Suites, master suites, superior suites and casitas represent the rooms choice.

All the rooms have bedrooms with organic fabrics, bathrooms with showers, private gardens and terrace, kitchen or breakfast service. The colors are neutral – the white of the walls and cotton sheets and the brown of the wooden furniture – giving a sense of fresh air and relaxation. All the different rooms also have massage and yoga services.

A natural pool stays in the middle of the farmhouse, the first one in Ibiza. The water of the pool is crystal clear, without using any chemicals or additives. It goes through a lava filter, while a waterfall oxygenates it. The roots of water lilies and other aquatic plants that surround the pool, help to remove impurities. This is one of the ecological attractions the farm features.

Lampoon review: sustainability commitment at Finca Can Martí

Solar panels provide electricity. While, the water is collected, filtered and reused. The farm also has an agricultural history, dating back to seventeenth century. The principles of permaculture – a kind of agriculture sustainable and ethical – brings the heritage to our days. The finca grows its own fruits and vegetables, findable in the organic breakfast, with eggs from the farm, homemade jams, freshly baked bread, and fruits picked from the garden. The little tienda inside the farm sells their products, from the fruits and legumes to the homemade jam that the guests taste in the breakfast.

The north side of the island hosts the most preserved and hidden beaches in only five minutes drive. Also on Sundays, in the neighborhood, takes place El Mercatillo de San Juan, a little typical street market. In the inland, the hilly countryside is the place for hiking routes, mountain biking, cycling routes and horseback riding.

Nature is all that you will see and hear. Even in the chaotic Ibiza, rural sites are the best places to relax and experience life at the peace of nature. Even the inland of exotic islands has got something to offer, a new and different experience in the heart of nature. Finca Can Martí is a little paradise, in the middle of the natural parks, with hidden places and few visitors. A new way of living in the countryside with activities that brings you both seaside and hills. Also, there is an attention for homegrown and organic food, for a healthy body and mind.
