Paper Moon, Milan. A garden in via Bagutta

On the other side of Via Bagutta, at the bottom of the courtyard of Palazzo Reina, recently refurbished by the de Balcany heirs, the Paper Moon Giardino opens its doors

On the other side of Via Bagutta, at the bottom of the courtyard of Palazzo Reina, recently refurbished by the de Balcany heirs, the Paper Moon Giardino opens its doors: a green lawn accompanied by cool water, glass canes, roses and laurels—under the linden tree that is the best kept secret in Milan. The vaulted rooms, ceilings and frescoes, that late-nineteenth-century Milanese understatement: the glass doors open onto a patio, two steps, gravel and soft grass. Outdoor tables, white cushions and sun umbrellas represent successful design.

The ladies have a new salon, they would once have said, quoting an article by Lina Sotis in the Corriere, when the Milan chronicles were the most read in the city. Lazy chatter, accompanied by the scent of tuberose and tweed by Chanel, would have informed the strolling ladies that a new corner had opened in the sun, in the shadow behind Via Bagutta. Initial suspicion and snob-like prejudice, an eyebrow raised – to mean we’ll see about that, you can’t just say new round these parts, where we like things just as they are, thank you.

The raised eyebrows relax. Mistrust disappears like dry leaves in the spring. The idea of new is still relative—at Paper Moon. This is not a change of location, that would be September turbulence for these winds of tuberose—the Paper Moon that we all know and love stays just where it is. Stefania and Enrica have followed an idea by Claudio Bertoni, leading to the birth of the Paper Moon Giardino.

In May, the ancient linden tree will give off its scent. Paper Moon, whether on the road or in the garden, will continue to work quietly: a private kitchen for city center families when the kids are on holiday with grandparents and nannies, for the magazine editors who leave their offices late, for designers who stop being celebs here. Paper Moon is a symbol of Milan—leaving aside dramas of spoilt models, aggressive finances, mirrors and social climbing, Milan remains a city of speed and work. Reserved, obviously, for those who believe in it and those who love it.
