Florence Tétier has released a Tétier Bijoux jewelry collection designed during isolation: drawing inspiration from everyday life using only what was available
Florence Tétier is a Paris-based artist who is driven by odd concepts. Through experimenting with plastic, she gives a second face to objects that have lost their function – she finds their potential and transforms them into jewels. Tétier shares her vision on the creative process and describes the motivation behind her upcycled bijouterie. What appears as an ensemble of randomness, exotic and unconventional, serves as a visual exploration tool and a re-evaluation of the term ‘beauty’.
Growing up, Tétier was surrounded by women who did manual work; her grandmother used to paint while her mother enjoys sewing. Eventually, Tétier did graphic design and never ceased to leave her passion for crafts. When she began working on new initiatives that were closely connected with digital devices, she searched for alternatives to bring back the art of handmade objects into her life. While Tétier was art directing Nyeth Niyer Spring Summer 2018 show, she volunteered to create jewelry for the collection as no one was working on it. She debuted with a hybrid form of jewels that juxtaposed the melting plastic hairbrush with acid colors. That event was the impetus for the creation of the Tétier Bijoux. She continued creating jewelry since then, working with plastic objects, sculpts, and material melts reconfigured them into one-off pieces. Tétier crafts each of her pieces by hand. Every accessory is a one-off, as the designer utilizes upcycled materials sourced from the available.
In 2016, Florence Tétier first introduced the motif ‘flowers’, which she fuses into her collections ever since. She is a co-Founder of Novembre Magazine, the fashion and art platform. Tétier also contributes as an editor for Dazed Beauty. Her pieces have been featured in a range of fashion and art publications and were seen on catwalks of Preen, where she collaborated with British designers Fyodor Golan and Charlotte Knowles. Along with the photographer Nicolas Coulomb, Tétier shot an editorial for the Kenzo Holiday collection 2016. As of her recent projects, she joined the team of The Show Must Go On Jean Paul Gaultier’s video as a creative director to record the backstage of the designer’s Haute Couture house. Despite numerous collaborations, she teaches at Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL) as well as at the Haute École d’Art et Design de Genève (HEAD) in Geneva.
Since Tétier Bijoux is a tangential project with other initiatives, she tries to keep it entertaining by mixing professional images with random content and enjoying it in the process. «I find rubbish inspiring, food, my daughter’s drawings, nature». She created bowls out of playdough, accentuated through the incorporation of dried flowers which align with the designs of her jewelry pieces. Her decorative jewels have another function that is serving as a sculpture for an interior setting. As the designs are noticeable in terms of size and forms, she prefers assembling them in a way that it would have a photogenic profile. «I upcycle and build pieces from what is around me, in my house, office and material I find on the streets. I work after the motto: ‘Nothing dies, everything transforms’».IMAGE GALLERY
