COSE Journal 3 Sink

COSE Journal 3 the bathroom sink. This issue explores how the objects inhabiting the space intertwine with our daily gestures, quietly shaping our sense of self. At its heart is an attention to material presence and the tactile, multisensory experience of this domestic surface, where textures, sounds and sensations converge into a hypnotic choreography. The sink, conceived not merely as a surface but as a microcosm of our deepest, most unsettling fears and thoughts, becomes a stage on which the quality of life plays out in full force. Here, vanity, grime and secret oddities wash away with every stroke, only to merge and form something else down – or up – the plughole.
Modern objects find themselves thrown into a vast, dangerously indistinct mass, connected to the subject by seemingly feeble and impersonal relationships. We can react to the defeminization of the object by continuing to exercise our capacity for affection and prioritization.
In a society driven by overconsumption and compulsive buying, in an era in which it is impossible not to notice the aftermath of our purchases, paying attention to what we buy and how we buy it has become an ethical and political statement. The only way to reassess our understanding of freedom is to cultivate a new type of bond with the things around us, whatever they may be.
