Sable Nuit, Armani Privé: an untold story between Armani and the Middle East

The unisex Armani Sable Nuit has been created by the perfumer Nicolas Beaulieu as an homage to nature and its contrasts – an olfactory oxymoron

Giorgio Armani fragrance wardrobe

In 1982 Giorgio Armani decided to stimulate another of the senses by launching his first fragrance, Armani Femme. It is possible to consider Giorgio Armani’s fragrances as a wardrobe: diversified per gender, occasion and personal taste. The Emporio Armani ‘fragrance wardrobe’ is made of contemporary, spirited and youthful scents. They echo each other’s mood but can be enjoyed individually.

Stronger With You, celebrates the lightheartedness of youth and the present in a modern key. In Love With You corresponds to a more sensual and feminine counterpart. On the other hand, the fragrances belonging to the Armani collection, such as Armani Code and , reflect the elegance and the linearity of a tailleur and a draped shirt into a scent. Armani also created the Armani Privé Haute Couture fragrance collection. This is a high-end perfume line, made with selected ingredients, designed to be worn by men and women.

The essence of Armani Privé Fragrances

Created in 2004, the Armani Privé Haute Couture Fragrances Collection captures the essence of Giorgio Armani Privé Haute Couture. It translates into fragrances using selected ingredients that tell a story of places, cultures and personal experiences. Available in a limited edition, each bottle belonging to this collection is engraved with a unique number. It is between one and 1300 and is delivered along with an authenticity certificate.

The Armani Privé Haute Couture Fragrances can be sub-categorized in four collections of perfumes. Les Eaux, fresh scents that pay a tribute to nature, La Collection, a modern reinterpretation of perfumery’s traditional ingredients, Les Terres Précieuses, inspired by different cultures, its art, atmospheres and traditions and Les Mille et Une Nuits, inspired by the Oriental world and its treasures.

In 2021, the collection of Les Mille et Une Nuits added the Oriental Sable Nuit. The group currently amounts to six fragrances including: Rose d’Arabie, Oud Royal, Cuir Noir, Cuir Zerzura and Musc Shamal.

Armani Privé Haute Couture fragrance collection can be considered as an expression of Giorgio Armani’s own personal experiences and influences. It leads to an exploration of nature and culture. It is able to unveil an invitation to unexpected olfactory journeys through ingredients.

The Arabic influence

As a child, Mr. Armani knew about the Middle East only from what he saw in films and books. Years later, he travelled to the Middle East. The first city he visited was Dubai and from that moment he realized how distant it was from his imagination. Since then, Arabia started playing a major role within the Italian designer’s projects and creations. Armani has created several perfumes applying this criteria: Onde Mystère and Eau De Nuit Oud as examples. All the fragrances belonging to the Les Mille Et Une Nuits Armani/Privé fragrances collection are odes to the Middle East.

Armani Sable Nuit’s composition

Armani Sable Nuit has been created by the perfumer Nicolas Beaulieu as an homage to nature and its contrasts.  This makes the new unisex fragrance by Armani Privé an olfactory oxymoron. Beaulieu also composed Musk Malaki by Chopard, Signorina Misteriosa by Salvatore Ferragamo and the Acqua and Legend declinations of Invictus by Paco Rabanne.

It starts with the fresh scent of olibanum and pink pepper as top notes, followed by cedar wood, benzoin, labdanum and patchouli to create the heart of the perfume. Then, all of these ingredients are blended in with base notes of ambroxan, olibanum and vanilla in order to create a warm and persistent formula. Based on the combination of notes, Armani Prive Sable Nuit is thus classified as an Oriental fragrance.

Armani Sable Nuit’s exterior design resembles the typical and distinctive shape of Les Mille Et Une Nuits Armani Privé’s fragrances: an onyx colored matt glass bottle sealed with a golden smooth cap, while the fragrance name is engraved on a golden Armani Privé stamped plaque set on the falcon’s face.

Nicolas Beaulieu, the nose of the fragrance

Nicolas Beaulieu, the nose who created Sable Nuit, was meant to become a master perfumer since he was a child. Beaulieu used to live in a village in a house with a large garden. During that time, he loved to cut the grass, to admire flowers growing and to watch his mother cooking with all the spices: the smells were a component of his landscape.

Young Nicolas, unaware of the existence of perfumers, passionate about history and ancient monuments, decided to become an archaeologist. He discovered, thanks to school counselling; Ispica, the French school of perfumery. Nicolas visited Ispica and ever since that experience, he realized he had found his true vocation: perfumery. During the studying years at the French school, the perfumer gained technical knowledge. After receiving his diploma, Nicolas left France to go to Ireland, then the Netherlands, New York and Shanghai. This was in order to obtain more insights, perspectives, to build up his expertise and curiosity.

His ingredients of choice include: grapefruit, musk, bergamot, orange blossom, clary sage, pink pepper, amber and cedarwood. These last three scents are some of the main components used by the perfumer to create Sable Nuit: a tribute to the contrasting and mysterious desert natural landscape.

Armani Sable Nuit

Taking inspiration from the elegance of the expansive desert landscape, Sable Nuit pays tribute to nature and its infinite contrasts. Created by perfumer Nicolas Beaulieu, the Oriental Spicy fragrance celebrates the meeting of the warmth of burning desert sand and the invigorating freshness of majestic clear nights.
