How Belvedere Defines a Greener Spirits Future
At the heart of Belvedere’s new “Off Script” campaign is the Belvedere Organic Vodka, composed of 100% organic rye and pure water drawn from Belvedere’s own artisan wells
Belvedere Vodka: Organic Production and Sustainable Innovation
In a dynamic spirits market increasingly driven by consumer demand for eco-conscious products and transparency, Belvedere Vodka continues to stand out with its sustainability commitments. Now, the historic Polish distillery is making yet another statement: its newly launched Belvedere Organic Vodka, heralded by a campaign titled “Off Script,” shot by photographer Tyler Mitchell. This major step reflects years of strategic investment, scientific collaboration, and a deep respect for the Polish terroir from which Belvedere’s signature rye originates.
A Storied Legacy in Polish Vodka Making
Belvedere Vodka traces its origins to Polmos Żyrardów in Poland. Though Belvedere as a brand launched internationally in the 1990s, the distillery in Żyrardów has a historical pedigree dating back well into the early 20th century, making it one of the oldest continuously operating vodka distilleries in Poland. The name “Belvedere” references the iconic Belweder Palace in Warsaw, symbolizing both Poland’s heritage and a dedication to craftsmanship.
From the outset, Belvedere’s approach has prioritized quality over quantity, focusing on a distinctive raw ingredient: rye grown on local Polish farms. Over the years, Belvedere has built strong relationships with these farmers to ensure traceability and consistent quality. This longstanding tradition has now evolved in a new direction, leading to the creation of an entirely organic expression of the brand’s hallmark style.
Introducing Belvedere Organic Vodka: A 100% Certified Rye Spirit
At the heart of Belvedere’s new “Off Script” campaign is the Belvedere Organic Vodka, composed entirely of 100% organic rye and pure water drawn from Belvedere’s own artisan wells. The shift to certified organic rye is far from superficial: it aligns with a broader corporate goal to transition all Belvedere vodkas to organic standards. For decades, Belvedere has championed Poland’s agricultural traditions, working closely with local partners to preserve the land’s natural fertility and flavor potential.
By achieving the organic certification, Belvedere cements its commitment to avoiding artificial pesticides or fertilizers in the farming process. The result is not just a vodka that meets rising consumer expectations for organic authenticity; it’s a spirit with a deeper sense of place, reflecting the mineral nuances and complexity that Polish rye can yield when cultivated in an environmentally friendly manner.
“Off Script” Campaign: Capturing Authenticity Through Tyler Mitchell’s Lens
Shot by Tyler Mitchell, the campaign aims to capture the spontaneity and unfiltered authenticity that Belvedere believes stands at the core of its brand.
Known for his dynamic and visually striking work, which often explores themes of identity, culture, and representation, Tyler Mitchell is an American photographer and director. Born in 1995, Mitchell rose to prominence as one of the first Black photographers to shoot a cover for Vogue magazine, featuring Beyoncé in 2018. His work blends a fresh, youthful aesthetic with a deep focus on diverse narratives, capturing moments of beauty, empowerment, and authenticity.
Mitchell’s photographic style is characterized by vibrant colors, natural lighting, and a sense of intimacy, often highlighting Black joy and resilience. Mitchell is also a filmmaker, working on projects that further express his vision of inclusivity and positive cultural representation.
The Road to 100% Organic: From Field to Bottle
Belvedere’s pivot to organic sources has been an ongoing process. Initially lauded for its “rye-to-bottle” approach—which involves working with select Polish rye farmers in the Mazovian region—Belvedere took a measured path toward full organic certification. This required close collaboration with local agricultural partners, who had to alter their own cultivation methods and adhere to stringent organic guidelines.
To ensure that its journey to becoming fully organic wouldn’t compromise quality or availability, Belvedere invested in training and technical support for farmers. Gradually, these partners adopted more natural farming solutions, from rotating crops to minimize pest issues to reducing or eliminating synthetic fertilizers. As a result, Belvedere has solidified relationships with producers committed to preserving soil health, biodiversity, and water resources—core pillars of organic farming.
Biomass Facility: A Game-Changing Milestone in Sustainability
Perhaps Belvedere’s most significant stride toward sustainable production is its biomass facility, inaugurated in 2021 following three years of dedicated work. The European Commission even extended a grant to Belvedere’s distillery to pioneer an on-site biomass capture plant—an accomplishment underscoring the distillery’s leadership within the spirits sector.
A biomass plant leverages organic waste to generate energy. In Belvedere’s case, the system converts natural by-products from the distillation process—as well as organic matter gathered from rye production—into a renewable energy source. This mechanism drastically cuts the need for conventional fossil fuels and helps turn what would otherwise be waste or residue into a valuable resource. The brand reported that its biomass plant would accelerate the reduction of energy-related CO₂ emissions by as much as 95%.
