Kubrick Bookshop, Hong Kong: A Hub for Film, Music, and Culture

Kubrick Bookshop in Hong Kong is one of the city’s most notable movie bookstores and record stores. Its story began in 2001, following the closure of P.O.V Bookstore. While P.O.V focused on gender and film books, Kubrick expanded particularly in the film sector, as its name—paying homage to director Stanley Kubrick—suggests.

Located next to Broadway Cinematheque, a small four-screen cinema hosting numerous film festivals and unconventional art films, Kubrick has also been a publisher since 2003, releasing over 30 titles ranging from gender studies to social issues.

Today, Kubrick operates two stores in Hong Kong: a larger one in Yau Ma Tei and a smaller branch in Kwun Tong’s apm (Cityplaza). While the latter focuses on handmade accessories from local and international artists, the Yau Ma Tei store includes a disc store and movie memorabilia shop inside the Cinematheque, offering art film DVDs, soundtracks, movie posters, and indie music vinyls from around the world. The store has become a hub for film lovers, fostering a strong sense of community.

The Yau Ma Tei store features a café and regularly hosts talks, workshops, and live music events with local and international artists. This community-oriented spirit began in the early years, with programs like Kubrick Friday Live starting in 2007, where musicians performed inside the bookstore.

Café Kubrick complements Broadway Cinematheque, offering visitors a space to relax with coffee and treats while exploring a multilingual collection of books on topics from French philosophy to modern Chinese cinema. Visitors can move seamlessly between café and bookstore, making the experience holistic.

No public WiFi is available, emphasizing reading and book engagement. However, Kubrick embraces digital readers through its online store, where visitors can browse the latest art, film, photography, and fiction titles, including Kubrick’s own publications, curated recommendations, and indie magazines.

Yau Ma Tei District

Yau Ma Tei, in the heart of Kowloon, is bordered by Dundas Street to the south and Austin Road to the north, between Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui. This vibrant district combines energy, culture, and history, and is famous among tourists for Temple Street Night Market.

The neighborhood around Kubrick is artsy and fits the bookstore’s cinema-focused concept. The area combines residential and retail spaces and includes cultural landmarks such as Tin Hau Temple, Yau Ma Tei Theatre, and Yau Ma Tei Police Station, making it a perfect backdrop for a bookstore dedicated to film and music.

Besides Hong Kong, Kubrick has branches in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, continuing its mission to connect communities through books, films, and music.
