David Chickey, Founder of Radius Books, Santa Fe

David Chickey, with a diverse background in the arts, founded Radius Books in Santa Fe in September 2007. A Tennessee native, Chickey studied art history and painting in the United States and continued his studies at Sussex University in the UK. After working at Sotheby’s in London and gaining experience in museums and galleries, he initially considered opening his own art gallery. However, Chickey realized that his true path lay elsewhere, and he turned toward publishing, merging his passion for books and art.

Chickey’s Vision

Chickey began in publishing by designing book covers for art-related literature. His vision for Radius Books is guided by an “artist-first” philosophy: rather than pursuing profit, the goal is to give artists autonomy and a platform to share their work authentically. Over the years, Radius Books has published 160 titles, covering photography, fine arts, and monographs, always prioritizing artistic integrity and education. Chickey explains: “My ardor for books and publishing, combined with the essence of art, led to the creation of Radius Books. Our aim is not to maximize profit but to present artists’ work to the public while educating audiences about diverse art forms through printed materials.”

Radius Books in Santa Fe

Radius Books is located on the first floor of a building formerly used as doctor’s offices. Its interior, designed by Chickey’s husband, architect Trey Jordan, spans 70 feet by 40 feet and is structured gallery-style to showcase book covers as artworks. The name “Radius” reflects the idea of a line extending from the center of a circle to its circumference, symbolizing the publishing house’s mission to connect the art community and reach audiences widely. Chickey chose Santa Fe over a city like New York to establish deep ties with the local community and preserve a sense of identity in a culturally rich environment.

A Non-Profit Organization

Radius Books operates as a non-profit, with a dual mission: supporting artists and promoting arts education. Since its founding, the organization has donated over 75,000 art-related books to schools and public libraries across the United States. This model ensures that the artist’s voice remains central, while making high-quality art education accessible. Chickey reflects: “Our non-profit structure allows us to focus on the longevity and integrity of the books, just as galleries ensure the preservation of exhibitions through donations.”

The Team

Radius Books is managed by a collective of five individuals: David Chickey – Publisher and Creative Director, overseeing book design and creative vision; Megan Mulry – Communications and Development, managing relationships with artists, writers, donors, and partners; Chelsea Weathers – Managing Editor, responsible for copy editing, conceptualization, and contracts; Mat Patalano – Design and Production, managing visual identity, branding, and book aesthetics; María Luisa Minjares – Fulfillment and Engagement, coordinating donations, social platforms, and community outreach. While each member has specific responsibilities, their roles overlap to ensure collaboration and maintain the high quality of all projects.

More than a Publishing House

Radius Books has hosted the annual Artist Weekend, connecting published artists and local creators. Despite disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, the event continues in a smaller, sustainable format and adheres to environmental guidelines. The organization also runs the Donation Day program, sending hundreds of copies of new titles to libraries, community centers, and art organizations nationwide. As of 2025, Radius Books continues its mission, fostering artistic growth, bridging communities of creators and audiences, and expanding its donation programs to support arts education across the country.
