Title: Take Flight

Take Flight provides an interpretation of a group of friends’ plane watching in the park. A fever dream that transcends reality, Take Flight hones in on nostalgia, adolescence and the movement of time all whilst being situated on one small patch of grass. Taking visual queues from the work of Martin Parr, Sophia Coppola, Elaine Constantine and the books of Enid Blyton, Take Flight is contemporary, dynamic and dreamy yet rooted in outdoor life and adventure.

The analog photography of Betty Oxlade-Martin: womanity, identity, and the complexity

Betty Oxlade-Martin is a portrait and fashion photographer based in London. Her work can be distinguished by its sensitive, feminine approach, exposed through natural yet contrasting light and rich, raw colors. Working with traditional medium format film techniques, analog photography she enjoys capturing lighthearted, tender moments that illustrate womanity, identity, and the complexities within the people around us.

Betty often reflects on her childhood and teen years spent in dance education through visual queues in lighting, dress, props and art direction across her fashion and documentary works. She finds interest in how we play out our identities whether they are group or singular. Seeking fashion styles, mannerisms, idiosyncrasies, and rituals which unite individuals as a collective, inviting her audience to find pleasure in how we strive to stand out whilst pinning to belong.

Betty circles a number of sub-themes within her practice, including nature, nostalgia, and dream-like fantasy states. Her images have a carefree, naive feel, playing on childlike pleasures of make believe whilst referencing vintage imagery and European folklore. She takes care to find the joy within a person or subject, creating environments which hold exploration and story telling at their core, celebrating what makes a character so special, their quirks, thoughts and feelings. For Lampoon online she published her editorial Take Flight, using analog photography in a story of womanity and intimate femininity.
