Photographer Gianmarco Onofri on acceptance, human diversity, sex and respect. The love story of Veysel and Yaakov

A love story that begins accidentally – as in a movie or a book – with a chance meeting in a bar. A photographic story by Gianmarco Onofri about tenderness and acceptance, human diversity, sex and respect.

«We are Veysel and Yaakov. I am Kurdish, but I immigrated to Italy at the age of three. Yaakov was born in occupied Palestine. Four years ago, on a trip to Berlin we met in a small bar called Roses. It was love at first sight. From that day we tried not to separate again, but we encountered many obstacles due to our backgrounds, visa problems, etc. We finally got married in Copenhagen this May and are getting the documents to be together permanently.

In recent years we have concentrated mostly on being together. I’m an artist and Yaakov is an aspiring chef and now that we have a base in Milan we will start cultivating our passions».

Gianmarco Onofri, photographer

Gianmarco Onofri was born in 1999 and he studied film direction in Milan. His photography aims to capture and create intimate and raw moments. Onofri prefers working with nonprofessional models in nonstaged situations. His subjects are usually friends, people he knows or he wants to meet. «Just spending a day with somebody» is a way to explain his approach.

Nudity and eroticism are recurring in his work too. When clothes are there, they are never the focus of the image. He mostly takes pictures in private houses or wherever the person who’s being photographed feels most comfortable. His main references are somewhere between pop culture and porn imaginary and his favorite artists are Nan Goldin, Larry Clark, and Corinne Day.
