These athletes are not real

Models ready to present their sport in front of a jury, hoping to be selected for the Olympics – and some of these sports have never been part of the Olympic disciplines

The Waiting Line – Photography Jeanne Lucas, styling Alexandra Conti

The Waiting Line is a conceptual photographic series that explores the boundary between reality and fiction. Inspired by the Olympic Games, this series offers a reversed vision of sports representation by choosing models to portray athletes, rather than photographing real athletes. Models pose in a waiting line, ready to audition to present their sport in front of a jury. They hope to be selected for the Olympics. However, the twist lies in the fact that these athletes are not real and some of the sports presented have never been part of Olympic disciplines.

By playing with casting codes, a practice well known to models in their careers, “Waiting Line” subverts these conventions by placing them in a sporting context. This subtle yet powerful staging raises questions about authenticity, representation, and reality. By replacing real athletes with models, the series creates a universe where appearance and performance are fabricated, thus questioning the veracity of what we see. Illusion blends with reality, reminding us that what we perceive as true can sometimes be a mere visual construction.
