I Ragazzi – Ed Aked
I Ragazzi is a photographic publication by Ed Aked examining representations of masculinity within the social and ceremonial context of the Palio di Siena, the historic horse race held twice annually in Siena, Tuscany. Developed through long-term photographic observation, the project documents participants, spectators, rituals, and collective behaviors associated with the event.
Working in a large-format tabloid structure, Aked focuses on gestures, uniforms, physical proximity, group dynamics, and public performance. The photographs analyze how masculine identities are constructed, displayed, and negotiated within a highly codified cultural environment. Rather than documenting the race itself as a sporting event, the publication concentrates on the individuals and social structures that surround it.
The volume combines portraiture, documentary photography, and observational imagery, recording the visual complexity of the Palio as a system of tradition, competition, and collective participation. Through 236 pages of photographic material, the book investigates the relationship between ritual, identity, and public space while providing a detailed visual record of one of Italy’s most enduring civic events.
