Twenty-One Conversations with Architects — Arquitectura-G

An architecture book published by Apartamento, bringing together 21 interviews on domestic space, architectural experimentation and the relationship between houses and the people who inhabit them.

Twenty-One Conversations with Architects is a publication by Barcelona-based architecture studio Arquitectura-G, published by Apartamento in 2026. Compiled by architect and editor Moisés Puente, the book brings together more than fifteen years of conversations originally published in the architecture section of Apartamento magazine, beginning with its first issue in 2008.

Across 416 pages, the collection connects architects from different generations and architectural traditions, examining how personal experience, technical experimentation and domestic life influence the design of buildings.

Arquitectura-G: Twenty-One Conversations on Architecture and Everyday Life

Since 2008, Arquitectura-G has edited the architecture section of Apartamento, approaching the discipline through conversations with architects about their work, homes and individual interpretations of space.

The interviews investigate architecture beyond its formal representation. Houses become places of experimentation, where questions of proportion, comfort, ambiguity, privacy and everyday rituals influence the relationship between construction and habitation.

The publication also documents the development of Arquitectura-G’s own architectural thinking. Across fifteen years, recurring interests emerge: scale, domesticity, hedonism, the bathroom as architectural space and the house as a laboratory for testing different ways of living.

Ricardo Bofill, Álvaro Siza, Smiljan Radić and the Architecture of Domestic Space

The anthology includes conversations with Ricardo Bofill, Álvaro Siza, Smiljan Radić, Oscar Tusquets, César Manrique, Fernando Higueras, Bernard Rudofsky, Alberto Ponis, Anne Holtrop, Sam Chermayeff, Christian Kerez and Pezo von Ellrichshausen, among others.

The book opens with Eduardo Longo, whose house in São Paulo incorporates a sphere constructed above the existing building in 1979. It closes with Mauricio Pezo and Sofía von Ellrichshausen, whose architectural practice investigates the relationship between geometric structures, inhabitation and landscape.

Between these two projects, the conversations explore architecture through personal decisions, unconventional constructions and different interpretations of the domestic environment.

The result is a comparative record of architectural practices that do not necessarily share the same formal language, but return to a common question: how can a building respond to the ordinary needs of human life without reducing architecture to a standardized solution?

The House as a Laboratory: Scale, Intimacy and Architectural Experimentation

In Twenty-One Conversations with Architects, the house is understood as more than a finished architectural object. It is a space continually transformed by the people who inhabit it. The interviews move between technical discussions and personal observations, revealing how architects negotiate structure, geometry, material decisions and everyday requirements. This approach connects the work of internationally established figures with smaller experimental practices, placing different architectural generations within a shared field of investigation.

Architecture emerges as a continuing process rather than a final form: the building is constructed, occupied, adapted and reconsidered through use.

Apartamento and Arquitectura-G: An Editorial Archive Since 2008

Founded in Barcelona in 2006 by Jonathan Arnabat, Jordi Ayala-Bril, Igor Urdampilleta and Aitor Fuentes, Arquitectura-G works across residential architecture, installations, commercial interiors and urban planning. The studio received the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Emerging Architect Prize in 2015.

Its collaboration with Apartamento began in 2008, establishing a long-term editorial project that combines architectural research with the magazine’s interest in everyday interiors. Compiled by Moisés Puente, Twenty-One Conversations with Architects reorganizes this archive into a single volume. Conversations originally published at different moments are brought together to reveal connections across decades, geographies and architectural approaches.
