At MUSE, Trento: B-Corp certified Italian companies Zordan and Miomojo share their stories

On the occasion of the event, Miomojo received the Zordan Sustainability Award in recognition of their commitment as a cruelty-free, B-Corp certified company

Tackling climate change: an event for raising awareness and educate

Adapting to climate change means joining forces for outlining new business models and adopting the new best practices and behaviors in the corporate world to revolutionize the way business is perceived and practiced.

This way of carrying the idea of the event organized by Zordan Srl SB, an Italian company specialized in the creation of attractive and sustainable retail spaces, held last June at MUSE, Trento Science Museum. The focus of the event was to highlight the urgent need to raise awareness and educate on the issues involving sustainable production and the level of commitment expected from the Italian industry in the future.

Moderator of the first segment was David Tombolato, Scientist, Scientific Communicator and curator of the Sustainability Gallery at MUSE, who commented on the ecological footprint generated by manufacturers.

«The impact made from industrial activities are not the only ones having consequences on the ecosystem and on animal and plant biodiversity, but they’re jeopardizing the survival of the human species itself. In this perspective, everyone, from companies to institutions or individuals, are called upon to reduce their carbon footprint»

«We can’t afford to leave things as they are now and wait for the emergency to stabilize and eventually settle. We must act in such a way as to reverse the course of this trend. This is why we’re talking about regeneration».

Tombolato explained we are living in the anthropocene, an era established at the end of World War II. From a scientific point of view, after the end of the biggest conflicts, the surface of the Earth had so deeply changed at geological level that the radionuclides were altered: all the nuclear explosions that have occurred have modified the superficial layers of the Earth crust forming a demarcation mark of the geological age.

«The temperatures have been rising linearly since the 1970s. We have seen an exponential trend. So things are going as the scientific climate models are predicting, so we are aware of what is happening. The problem lies in the fact that stability has been broken».

Zordan srl SB, the company

Founded in Vicenza in 1965 is one reference point for luxury brands – such as Bulgari, Ferragamo and Fendi –  for the creation of attractive retail spaces. They range from mono-brand set-ups, structures that deal with the furnishing of high-end retail stores, and custom-made interiors, a division dedicated to special furnishing solutions for end customers.

After the acquisition of the Woodways company in Michigan, Zordan has gained a strategic production site for both the shop-fitting market and the HORECA sector in North America.

Over the last few years Zordan has been engaged in initiatives in support of the Italian territory, working closely with non-profit organizations and promoting school-work alternation. The company has reduced its environmental impact thanks to the identification of systems capable of preventing the use of hazardous substances that are then purified and reused, the purification of the equipment used in production and further reduction of their emissions using advanced technology.

On the issue of reversing the trend and tackling climate change Alfredo Zordan, Commercial Director of the company promoting the event, intervened by presenting the new strategy that the company is approaching.

Thanks to the realization of a verified instrument, Zordan explained their ability to quantify the greenhouse gas emissions generated during production, and also measure and map the emissions caused by a single piece of furniture.

With this tool, Zordan also covers the role of consultant for their customers, to encourage and support them in the process of reducing their ecological footprint.

Miomojo, winner of the first Zordan Sustainability Award

As the first B-Corp and Benefit Company in its sector, Zordan has always been committed to sustainability issues focusing on the theme of climate change and engaging in numerous activities to share the knowledge behind their expertise.

In this perspective, the Zordan Sustainability Award was established, an award that represents the commonality of values between companies that Zordan has decided to confer to Miomojo, a cruelty-free fashion brand recognized for the effort and the commitment on creating a brand based on a more respectful mindset; respectful for the people and for the animals.

In particular, the accessories designed by Miomojo are made using only regenerated or recycled materials like AppleSkin, from the waste of South Tyrolean apples gathered from the food industry. Just like Zordan, the company is certified B-Corp and Benefit Company that integrates the objective of having a positive impact on society.

«If we don’t adapt and start taking care of ourselves, not just the world we live in, we might as well face extinction, like the other species before us» stated  Claudia Pievani, Founder and CEO of Miomojo. «We are grateful and honoured to have received the Zordan Sustainability Award, a further confirmation of the commitment we have been putting into the achievement of our corporate objectives».

Since vegan plant-based alternatives to leather contain components made from synthetic materials, Miomojo like many other brands, are expressing their desire to create using fully compostable and biodegradable materials. On this matter Pievani explained the interest in developing new designs using lab-fabricated leather, extracted from cows through a biopsy and grown in a laboratory using tissue engineering.

In the beautiful frame of the Science Museum of Trento designed by Renzo Piano

The MUSE, the museum in which the event was held, is located in the “Le Albere” district, and was inaugurated in the summer of 2013. Designed by Renzo Piano, it’s a replacement for the Tridentine Museum of Natural Sciences. The building is spread over a total area of approximately 19,000 m², arranged over six floors to be discovered.

Inspired by the structure of a mountain, the museum showcases different sections displayed from top to bottom: the formation of the Dolomites, alpine biodiversity, the history of the first human settlements and the discovery of the origins of the world through the largest dinosaur exhibition in the alpine arc, making the relationship between man and nature at the heart of the MUSE experience. In this place, evolution and technology live together, and it is thought how they can both contribute to finding good solutions for the next future of human history.
