The Soap wants to be the Sun

Olivier Zahm reconnects with the emotional essence of image-making: his portraits of Annabelle Weatherly reveal clarity and vulnerability, while Duran Lantink’s sculptural forms redefine beauty itself

Under the winter light of the Balearic Islands, Annabelle Weatherly appears suspended between reflection and transparency — her body enveloped by the crystalline surface of a pool. Dressed in Duran Lantink’s sculptural creations, she becomes part of a composition where water, fabric, and sunlight merge into a single visual texture. The editorial, titled The Soap Wants to Be the Sun, was photographed by Olivier Zahm for Lampoon Issue 32 – SOAP, exploring the purifying and transformative power of cleansing — physical, emotional, and creative.

Olivier Zahm: Photography as a Mirror

Olivier Zahm describes photography as an act of personal reflection and resistance to superficiality. “This shoot made me realize how deeply I love taking photographs and shooting fashion — it’s always a diary of my life, a mirror reflecting who I am. It reminds me of the old-school values of photography: capturing time and emotion, and sharing them beyond pure fashion obsession,” he shared on Instagram.

Founder and editor-in-chief of Purple magazine, Zahm has been one of the defining voices in contemporary fashion and visual culture since the early 1990s. His career began as an art critic in Paris before co-founding Purple Prose in 1992 with Elein Fleiss — a publication that sought to challenge the glossy conventions of mainstream fashion imagery. Over the past three decades, Zahm’s work has documented creative communities across Paris, New York, and Los Angeles, establishing a photographic language that blurs the boundary between reportage, diary, and art.

In The Soap Wants to Be the Sun, Zahm revisits that sensibility. The lens is intimate yet distant, observing without judgment, capturing the body as both presence and reflection. Water becomes a metaphor for photography itself — a medium of distortion, purity, and truth.

Duran Lantink: Sculptural Fashion and the Fluidity of Form

Dutch designer Duran Lantink (born 1987, The Hague) brings a sculptural approach to fashion that redefines traditional notions of beauty and form. Educated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Sandberg Instituut, Lantink has built a reputation for his conceptual and sustainable methods, transforming existing garments and surplus materials into new, hybrid silhouettes.

His designs detach from the body, inventing new volumes that express irony and spontaneity while confronting the industry’s obsession with perfection. Lantink’s practice challenges systems of value within fashion — questioning uniform standards of aesthetics, gender, and desirability.

Based between Amsterdam and Paris, Lantink has collaborated with international institutions and artists, from the Stedelijk Museum to high-profile brand commissions. In 2025, he was appointed creative director of Jean Paul Gaultier, a role that confirms his status as one of the most distinctive and progressive voices in European fashion.
