The Possible Dream by Akila Berjaoui – a photography book

The Possible Dream is a photography book by Akila Berjaoui published by Prestel in 2026. Developed through analog photography, the volume documents bodies, coastlines, and mediterranean environments through a sequence of portraits and landscape observations produced across beach locations in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean basin.

Shot on film, the images are structured through natural light, grain, shadow, and proximity between subjects and environment. Berjaoui’s approach combines documentary observation with staged composition, constructing a visual system centered on gesture, exposure, and atmosphere. Water, skin, and sunlight function as recurring material elements throughout the sequence.

The publication extends themes previously explored in The Last Days of Summer, continuing an investigation into leisure spaces, seasonal temporality, and representations of the body within coastal environments. The majority of subjects are women, photographed through non-performative poses and spatial interaction rather than narrative staging. References to historical beach imagery and analog travel photography are integrated into a contemporary photographic framework.
