1 New York Times Plaza, NY 11356 is a photobook by Tom de Peyret, published by Poursuite, dedicated to the infrastructures of power and the hidden mechanics of the city. The book looks at New York not through its skyline or its tourist façades, but through the anonymous structures that allow it to function as an unofficial capital of empire. The city is barely recognizable: a bridge outline, a distant tower, the New York Times logo inside the printing plant in Queens where the newspaper comes off the presses.
The photographs move through areas that appear on maps only as blank spaces: military grounds, construction sites, prisons, airports, and abandoned or restricted zones. In parallel, the book follows the printing process of the New York Times, an almost archaic industrial object that will be read hours later in hotel lobbies, airports, and public libraries worldwide, delivered by the same trucks that cross the highway interchanges of the Five Boroughs.
The design borrows from the newspaper itself, with layered and offset inks that echo the printing press. Through this approach, photography functions as an investigation of the city as a machine, a complex engineering system that circulates information, goods, and capital. Text by Clément Ghys, design by Thomas Hervé.
