The City Is Ours, Discarded Gums – Other Editions

The City Is Ours #1: Discarded Gums is the first publication in a finite series of six bookzines by SerraGlia dedicated to the observation of overlooked urban details. Positioned between magazine, artist publication, and zine format, the series examines everyday traces found in public space through systematic visual documentation.

This first issue focuses on discarded chewing gum found on streets and sidewalks. The publication treats these residual marks not as waste but as indicators of urban behavior, movement, and repetition. Through photographic sequencing, pieces of gum are isolated from their functional context and analyzed as forms generated by use, pressure, weathering, and time. The city surface becomes an archive of involuntary visual patterns.

The volume includes 52 full-color images organized as a typological survey. Observation functions as the primary method: the project proposes that ordinary and neglected elements can produce alternative readings of the urban environment when removed from automatic judgment and reexamined through attention and classification.

Part of The City Is Ours series, the publication constructs a methodology of urban reading based on micro-scale details and material evidence.
