It is a period of reflection and relates to aesthetics, taking place before considering the restraints of production. Design is the process that precedes the discipline of manufacturing. Our Fashion Editor Giorgia Fuzio in conversation with Carly Mark and Ayla Argentina of Puppets and Puppets.
Ayla and I started working together on a fine arts basis. We were making things in my studio that were not fashion driven. Ayla had studied garment construction though, and was encouraging me to move in a fashion direction. We went for it and it worked. We enjoy the process and share a love for Galliano’s Dior, film, costuming, Comme Des Garçon, etc. Fashion is an amalgam of different things. The shows are theatrical and cinematic, our references are rooted in history, iconic characters, and nature. There’s so much room in fashion to breath. Inspirations: Galliano’s Dior, Comme Des Garçon, Kansai Yamamoto, Jean Paul Gaultier, Margiela, Replika Vintage in Los Angeles. We operate as a couturier. Everything is handmade and one of a kind in-house. We make an effort to not waste fabric, and buy responsibly. We love a classic Pannier.
